AfP cultivates a network to strengthen and advance the peacebuilding field, enabling peacebuilding organizations to achieve greater impact—tackling issues too large for any one organization to address alone.
Today, there are more active conflicts than during World War II. An estimated 300 million people will need humanitarian assistance and 130.8 million will be displaced in 2024 due to violent conflict, weather-related and environmental emergencies, and other crises. Furthermore, 15 countries are experiencing mass atrocities, and five others face imminent risk of them occurring. Since 2018, the world has broken global conflict records, and this trend is increasing, not abating. Amid a global rise in fragility and violence, including a deepening war in Ukraine and crisis in the Middle East, the peacebuilding community is navigating a dramatically evolving conflict landscape. New trends like artificial intelligence and environmental disruptions could cause large-scale shocks and violence. Meanwhile, a general decline in social cohesion and trust is complicating the resolution of violent conflicts.
Charting a way forward for the peacebuilding community will require reframing peacebuilding in ways that are actionable, practical and results-oriented. It will require more effectively and urgently building champions among communities of policymakers, business leaders, bilateral and multilateral donors, the nonprofit sector, and the broader public.
