“Shaping Peace Together” is this year’s theme for the International Day of Peace, Monday, September 21. Today, more than 50 percent of the population of nearly 7.8 billion people is under age 30, and the age group 15 to 24 is the largest and fastest growing demographic. To what extent do young people’s aspirations for our collective future focus on promoting peace, including the pursuit of human rights? This half-day interactive virtual event presented by young leaders from NewGen Peacebuilders, STAND, and Search for Common Ground, takes place on Saturday, September 19, right before the International Day of Peace and focuses on the essential role of young people in preventing conflict and building peace.

The half-day event will begin by recalling the initiative that led to unanimous adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2250 to raise the profile of young people creating peaceful communities, the establishment of the global Youth, Peace, and Security coalition, and the report “The Missing Peace” that calls for initiatives to create a new narrative about youth as partners in peace and security. An inspiring group of presenters from countries on four continents will share perspectives on human rights-related conflicts in their countries and their experiences as young peacebuilders. This event is also designed for action - #YES4YPS! The genesis of the U.S. Youth, Peace, and Security Act of 2020 will be highlighted. Ideas to advance a global movement of young peacebuilders will be shared. Storytelling training for influence and impact will be provided. And we’ll introduce and launch a new toolkit you can use to empower US students and educators to advocate for young peacebuilders around the world. Participants who attend this half-day event will have certificates awarded to them by October 2nd 2020.
