Digital Peacebuilding CoP: Ethically Using Social Media Data to Inform Peacebuilding and Mediating Programming

  • 1800 Massachusetts Ave NW Suite 401 Washington, DC United States (map)

Join the upcoming meeting of AfP's Digital Peacebuilding Community of Practice on Tuesday, June 21st at 11:00am ET!

Join Helena Puig Laurrari from Build Up and Daniel Burkhardt Cerigo from datavaluepeople to see what is possible when a social media analysis tool is made by and for peacebuilders. Phoenix is an open-source, non-commercial, customisable process and tool to support peacebuilders and mediators who want to work ethically with social media data to inform programming. To date, it has been used by Build Up, the UNDP, British Council and 18 civil society organisations across the Middle East and North Africa.

The conversation will explore:

  • A vision for contributing to decolonizing data through accessible social media analysis tools

  • A demo on how to use Phoenix, including data pipelines, customisable automatic labelling models, and data dashboards to visualise engagement, sentiment and networks

  • Examples on how it has been used to create evidence-based initiatives that respond to social media insights
